There are 1,611 HIV positive persons in Serbia - over 70 percent of them are registered in Belgrade, the international PLHIV Conference Serbia has heard. Opening the conference on Thursday, Serbian Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic stated that this three-day gathering will be an opportunity to recognize the shortcomings of national programs and to reach joint solutions and suggestions so that the care of HIV carriers would be raised to a higher level. Most HIV/AIDS patients in Serbia are Belgraders She said that, by adopting many relevant documents, Serbia has defined its relation to the problem, and has worked on promotion of legislation activity in that area since 2004. Assistant Health Minister Petar Bulat said that patients in Serbia have at their disposal antiretroviral therapy since 1997. A total of EUR 1.7 million were allocated for the improvement of the quality of living of HIV sufferers in the past five years, Bulat added. Dr. Tanja Knezevic, Director of the Institute of Public Health of Serbia said that, according to epidemiological data, Serbia does not differ much from the neighboring countries. As she said, the research done so far within the national HIV/AIDS Office showed that the quality of living and services provided to persons with HIV have improved, but that educational programs are not comprehensive, and communication with social welfare centers is insufficient. Aleksandar Stefoski, Deputy City Deputy Secretary of the Secretariat for Health, said that the conference is a good opportunity to discuss new technologies and issues of stigmatization. Dr. Marijana Mardaresku from the National Institute for Infectious Diseases in Romania listed examples from that country where the majority of sufferers are between the ages of 20 and 24, and the common way of transmitting HIV is through unprotected sexual intercourse. The Conference is organized by the Union Organization of Serbia involved in the protection of people living with HIV/AIDS, in cooperation with Youth of Jazas and the support of the City of Belgrade. The gathering is attended by representatives from Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, and numerous experts and HIV patients from Serbia. (Tanjug) Tanjug
