BASHH welcomes publication of position statement on doxycycline as post-exposure prophylaxis for sexually transmitted infections

The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) has welcomed the publication of a new joint BASHH and Public Health England (PHE) position statement on the use of doxycycline as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). A conference presentation had suggested that use of PEP with doxycycline was associated with a halving of the rates of bacterial STIs in men who have sex with men (MSM), in an extension of the French IPERGAY trial. However caution is advised.

Expanding HPV vaccine to teenage boys ‘not cost effective’, says official advice

The HPV vaccination should not be extended to boys as it is not cost-effective, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has recommended. In an interim statement, published today by the Department of Health, the JCVI concluded that the risk of infection in males has already been substantially reduced by good vaccine uptake in girls.

First vaccine shows gonorrhoea protection

A vaccine has for the first time been shown to protect against gonorrhoea, scientists in New Zealand say. The vaccine, originally developed to stop an outbreak of meningitis B, was given to about a million adolescents in New Zealand between 2004 and 2006. Researchers at the University of Auckland analysed data from sexual health clinics and found gonorrhoea cases had fallen 31% in those vaccinated. The meachanism of protection is unknown. This particular vaccine is no longer available but the UK has been using a similar vaccine, though whether it will protect is also unknown.

Does it ever make sense to target HPV screening at HIV-infected individuals?

A number of recent studies have considered the case for HPV-related cancer prevention interventions that are targeted at specific populations. A recent study suggests that, given their more rapid progression to precancerous conditions, HIV positive women in sub-Saharan Africa should be given the multivalent HPV vaccine, as it already is to HIV-positive MSM in some high-income settings.
