Symptoms and conditions

Mitochondrial damage can affect any organ or system in the body. For example, AZT (zidovudine, Retrovir)-related muscle damage was first attributed to mitochondrial toxicity in the late 1980s. Since then, several other conditions have been blamed on mitochondrial damage. The nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) cause varying side-effects because they are taken up by different tissues. In some cases, such as lactic acidosis, the link to mitochondrial toxicity is quite clear. In other conditions, there are conflicting data and a linkage has not been proven.

Community Consensus Statement on Access to HIV Treatment and its Use for Prevention

Together, we can make it happen

We can end HIV soon if people have equal access to HIV drugs as treatment and as PrEP, and have free choice over whether to take them.

Launched today, the Community Consensus Statement is a basic set of principles aimed at making sure that happens.

The Community Consensus Statement is a joint initiative of AVAC, EATG, MSMGF, GNP+, HIV i-Base, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, ITPC and NAM/aidsmap
