Only 42% in HIV group have an advance directive immediately before death

Only 4 in 10 HIV-positive people who died at a single center in 2013-2017 had completed an advance directive, including many people with a terminal condition [1]. About three quarters of the group had assigned medical power of attorney (MPOA).

Few opportunities currently exist for terminally ill people to participate in HIV research as a result of various cultural taboos and ethical concerns, such as exploitation, vulnerability, and coercion. However, when faced with their approaching death, some individuals may be willing to participate in research that offers no hope for their condition to leave a final gift to their community.

A Second Chance at Death

Long-term survivors, as haunted as we may be by our past, are uniquely qualified to address the practical and emotional concerns of our own mortality. I have arrangements for my living will, instructions not to resuscitate, and know my way around end-of-life care. Moreover, I am already in the practice of telling my friends how much I love them.

Community Consensus Statement on Access to HIV Treatment and its Use for Prevention

Launched today, the Community Consensus Statement is a basic set of principles aimed at making sure that happens.
