Australian biotech company Starpharma has announced the imminent launch of a condom coated with an antimicrobial chemical known as VivaGel. While it might be marketed as a great leap forward for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it’s unlikely to offer any more protection than your average condom.

Tobacco use associated with increased risk of oral HPV-16 infection

Study participants who reported tobacco use or had higher levels of biomarkers of tobacco exposure had a higher prevalence of the sexually transmitted infection, oral human papillomavirus type 16, according to a study in the Oct. 8 JAMA, a theme issue on infectious disease. HPV-16 is the most common cancer-causing variety of HPV.

Population-based evidence for the preventative efficacy of quadrivalent HPV in Australia

A recently published study claims to provide the first whole population analysis of the impact on genital warts of a national HPV vaccination programme – and this may be the best predictor of the longer-term, and more important, cancer prevention benefits to be seen in future years. The findings show a decline of 89.9% in admissions involving warts from 2006/7 to 2010/11 for girls aged 12-17 yrs, a decline of 72.7% for women aged 18-26, and a decline of 38% for men aged 18-14 (the indirect effect of female vaccination).

Investigating an outbreak of hepatitis C virus among MSM without HIV

Given the reports about the high-risk practices taking place in London (and likely other cities in high-income countries), it is likely that cases of sexually transmitted HCV are also occurring in some HIV-negative MSM. To investigate this possibility, researchers in London reviewed health-related information collected from HIV-negative patients who sought care at selected clinics in that city.

STIs and Hep C levels at all-time high in Australia

The Kirby Institute’s Annual Surveillance Report suggests a number of STIs are continuing to increase, with syphilis and gonorrhoea leading the charge. Hepatitis C infections are also a growing health issue with more people now dying from viral hepatitis infection than from HIV when it was in its peak in the 80s and 90s.

Teenage banter about sexual infections is not a #fail

As a sexual health researcher, I’ve talked to young men and women aged between 16 and 24 about chlamydia. I've heard “banter” being used by (mostly) men as a way of dealing with awkward conversations about chlamydia - they were often embarrassed to talk about it, especially within mixed-sex groups in colleges.

HIV Prevention Drug Truvada Might Lower Genital Herpes Risk, Too

A combination drug used to treat and prevent HIV — Truvada — may have an additional benefit: lowering the risk of a genital herpes infection, a new study suggests. Researchers found that African heterosexuals who were at risk of getting HIV from their partners were about 30 percent less likely to get infected with genital herpes if they took the drug tenofovir alone or with emtricitabine.
