HIV prevention gridlock as proposed extra NHS PrEP delayed

A proposal to double the number of people able to access PrEP (a highly effective HIV prevention pill) through the PrEP Impact Trial has been delayed by the trial oversight board. This is despite the fact that NHS England has agreed to fund the additional 13,000 places. Currently, many clinics have no spaces for additional patients and are turning away people at high risk of HIV, some of whom are going on to acquire the virus.

PrEP IMPACT trial update – January 2019

The PrEP Oversight Board met on 15th January 2019. The main item for discussion was a recommendation from the research team to increase trial places... Before final approval is given, the Board asked that rapid engagement with local authority commissioners and research sites be undertaken to assess their capacity to accept additional places... The Board will meet again within the next few weeks once these actions are complete, to confirm final decisions on increasing capacity, after which point additional places could then be allocated to participating clinics.

Revealed: UK patients stockpile drugs in fear of no-deal Brexit

Ministers have been urged by top doctors to reveal the extent of national drug stocks, amid growing evidence patients are stockpiling medication in preparation for a no-deal Brexit. The Royal College of Physicians (RCP), which represents tens of thousands of doctors, urged the government to be more “transparent about national stockpiles, particularly for things that are already in short supply or need refrigeration, such as insulin”.

Clinicians do not need to issue longer, or earlier than usual, prescriptions and patients should be reassured that there is no need for concern about the supply of their medication and therefore no need to stockpile.

NHS hope to double capacity of PrEP trial after huge demand for HIV prevention drug

Deborah Gold, Chief Executive of NAT (National AIDS Trust), said: “Having been pushing for increased access to PrEP for so long, we are pleased that NHS England has listened to us and agreed to fund more spaces for PrEP patients on the Impact trial. It has been completely unacceptable to see people in need of PrEP being turned away from clinics."

The NHS long-term plan is a missed opportunity on prevention. The Spending Review must not be.

The 10-year plan will not focus the health and care system on prevention. The best way to do this is to ensure that public health services are properly integrated into the system and resourced. We now await a Green Paper on prevention which provides another opportunity, but we are clear that local authority led public health has to be at the centre of this and that it can only reduce pressure on the NHS if given necessary investment - to this end HM Treasury and upcoming Spending Review must deliver.

Together, we can make it happen

We can end HIV soon if people have equal access to HIV drugs as treatment and as PrEP, and have free choice over whether to take them.

Launched today, the Community Consensus Statement is a basic set of principles aimed at making sure that happens.

The Community Consensus Statement is a joint initiative of AVAC, EATG, MSMGF, GNP+, HIV i-Base, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, ITPC and NAM/aidsmap
